In the House chamber on January 6th, 2021, David saw firsthand how fragile our democracy can be. With Trump back in the White House, the future of American democracy is once again at stake. The Republican trifecta within our federal government continues to pass dangerous legislation and enable Trump’s agenda with an absent system of checks and balances. Unfortunately, too many Democrats have chosen to side with Trump and MAGA Republicans rather than stand up for our democratic values.
In Congress, David will be the leader who meets the moment, doing everything in his power to undo the long-lasting harm this administration has done and will continue to do to all Americans. He will stand against Trump every vote, every time.
David also understands well just how essential it is that we uphold the accessibility of our elections and voting rights for every American – a longstanding issue in our democracy. Back in Congress, he’ll fight every day until the full Voting Rights Act is restored – equally fighting against oppressive legislation like the SAVE Act.
He has twice supported H.R. 1, the For the People Act, which would drastically expand voter access, reform campaign finance laws, and institute ethics reforms throughout the federal government.
In Congress, he will continue to work hard to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, named in honor of the civil rights icon whom he had the honor of serving alongside.
But his willingness to fight for our democracy extends far beyond the halls of Congress. David has been a strong supporter of the ACLU, contributing more than $20 million to establish the Trone Center for Justice and Equality. With David’s support, the ACLU has filed more than 200 legal actions against the Trump Administration to delay and disrupt their agenda.
