Important Deadlines

For the May 14 Primary Election, the advanced deadline to register to vote and update your information online is Tuesday, April 23, 2024. You can also register to vote during early voting or on election day.

If you use the State Board of Elections online system, you must be finished by 11:59 pm EDT.

To make sure that you are done by 11:59 pm EDT, the State Board of Elections suggests that you access the system no later than 11:50 pm EDT on the deadline.

If you submit an application to register to vote after the deadline, election officials will process it after the election.

You can provide any new information when you vote, but if you moved, you may have to vote with a provisional ballot. If you can’t register by the advanced deadline, go to an early voting center in the county where you live and bring a document that proves where you live.

This document can be your MVA-issued license, ID card, or change of address card, or your paycheck, bank statement, utility bill, or other government document with your name and new address.

The deadline to request a mail-in ballot from the state depends on how you want to receive your ballot.

The State Board of Elections instructs:

  • If you want to receive your ballot by mail or fax, your request must be received (not just mailed) by your local board of elections by Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Mailed or hand delivered request forms must be received by 8:00 pm EDT and forms faxed, emailed, or submitted online must be received by 11:59 pm EDT on May 7.
  • If you want to receive your ballot via email* and print it out, your request must be received (not just mailed) by your local board of elections by Friday, May 10, 2024. Mailed or hand delivered request forms must be received by 5:00 pm EDT and forms faxed, emailed, or submitted online must be received by 11:59 pm EDT on May 10.
  • If you hand deliver your request and the ballots are ready, you can pick up your mail-in ballot. You may take your mail-in ballot with you and return it by mail or you can vote with it at the local board office and give it to an election official. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot in person is election day, May 14, 2024. Please visit your local board of elections’ website for hours of operation.

If you miss the deadlines to receive your ballot via mail, fax, or email, but still want to vote by mail-in ballot, you or your agent must apply in person at your local board of elections.

*Please note that a ballot received via email must still be returned by hand, by mail, or dropped at a ballot drop off box.

Under the federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens mail-in Voting Act, military voters and voters who live outside the U.S. can vote by mail-in ballot. If you are a military voter or live outside of the U.S., learn more about mail-in voting.
