WASHINGTON POST: Trone wins major nod from teachers union in U.S. Senate race

The state’s largest teachers union is backing U.S. Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) in his bid for U.S. Senate, providing a major boost to the congressman in a competitive Democratic primary to fill the seat of retiring U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.).

The Maryland State Education Association, a 75,000-member union, has recommended its endorsement of Trone to the National Education Association. Trone received 63 percent of the delegates’ votes, slightly above the 58 percent needed to secure the recommendation, during a recent meeting.

The endorsement from MSEA is coveted among candidates in high-profile state Democratic primaries.

Cheryl Bost, president of MSEA, said Trone is an ally of educators and has a strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with the union in Western Maryland and in the Baltimore and D.C. region.

She said members “really fought hard for him on the floor in debate, and that’s based on those relationships.”

Bost said educators are excited to back Trone, the son of a public educator. “David Trone is willing to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work to deliver for our educators, but most importantly, he’s ready and willing to hear our concerns and take action to help us at a moment’s notice,” she said.
